Livestrong Challenge, Austin, TX
October 22, 2017
This is a well-known, well-organized and well-supported event. It is one of my annual cycling events and for a great cause. They offer the distances of 20, 45, 65 and 100 miles. This was my 5th Livestrong Challenge in Austin. I started back in 2012 (only skipped one year due to traveling). We had great weather every time in previous years, not this time. This year we had some weather issue at the start. The ride was scheduled to start the Palmer Events Center at 7:30 am. However, a thunderstorm came through with lightning in the area before we started. The organizer delayed the start for an hour and cut the 100-mile route to 77 miles. It was 9:05 am by the time my group (45-miles) left the Events Center and at that time there was still a light drizzle and the streets were wet. The weather improved soon after and the sun came out by 11. It didn't affect our spirit. They had great rest stops (they called them Power Stops) and volunteers were enthusiastic. The road surface was good and they had police officers at major interactions to keep us safe. Lots of food and entertainment after.
