Rolling Hills Challenge - Columbus, TX

May 2005

Beautiful ride! The scenery in Columbus is tremendous. The ride itself is full of gentle rollers, nothing out of hand as far as climbs. The one issue the organizers may want to address would be the stretches of road where the shoulder narrows to only a couple of feet. This is ranch country, and there are quite a few F350s hauling down the road at highway speeds. Other than that the ride is well staffed, the rest stops were appropriately stocked, and there's lots of mechanical support. Good job

I really enjoyed this rally. There was a tremendous amount of improvement since the last time I did this rally in 2002. The only thing that was really "wrong" with this rally was that about 20 to 25 miles of the 100K route was on some very rough county roads. The rest stops were much better than the last time I rode this despite the fact that the porta potties weren't set up yet (this is one of the drawbacks of being one of being near the front of the group on a ride). Hats off to the Columbus, Texas Lions Club and the boy scout troops in the area. They did a great job. As for the ride itself, it was great. The wildflowers are still in full bloom especially in the hilly areas (kind of made all the grunting and groaning worthwhile) and for the most part, the weather was excellent with slightly cooler than normal temperatures. The wind was a little tough but this is Spring in Texas.

This is another one of those small, out of the way rallies that are worth the 3-1/2 hour drive from Dallas. There were some good points and not so good points about this rally. The weakness is support. Since there is not a whole lot of sponsorship for this ride and it is held in a sparsely populated area, there is not a whole lot of manpower to control the intersections and adequately man the rest stops. The strengths and potential far outweigh the weaknesses. The strengths include plenty of rolling hills with enough trees to protect the riders from the strong winds, friendly people in one of the really great small towns in Texas, and good quality roads (the county roads in this area are better maintained than some of the state highways I have seen). The organizers have included a letter for us to plead with the bike shops in the area to help promote this ride. I think this rally has a lot of potential to really grow into something special.
